Western States 100, by the numbers
The oldest 100-miler in the world, from Olympic Valley to the Placer High track in Auburn. Every figure on this page is computed from 2,034 real finishes across 7 editions (2018–2025) — checkpoint by checkpoint. Not estimates. The actual field.

722 of 2,034 finishers (35.5%) earned the sub-24-hour silver buckle. The rest of the field piles up against the cutoff — the last hours of the clock hold more finishers than any other window in the race.
When the field actually arrives.
Official 2025 cutoffs against the median finisher's real arrival at all 21 stations. “Tight” is the share of 2025 finishers who cleared the station with less than one hour to spare.

Field pace: the median finisher's pace on the segment into this checkpoint, relative to their own whole-race average — right/orange = slower than race pace, left/blue = faster. Green Gate includes the Rucky Chucky river crossing, so its segment time contains the queue and the crossing itself. Arrival times assume the 5:00 local start. Buffer and Tight are computed on 2025 finishers against the 2025 cutoff chart. Runners who missed a cutoff or dropped are not in the data (finishers only).
The race is planned on paper. It's decided out there.
The slowest stretch of the entire course for the median finisher — 1.56× their whole-race pace, 20h 29m into the race.
The second-hardest segment — 1.46× their whole-race pace, 13h 33m into the race.
The share of 2025 finishers who cleared Duncan Canyon (mile 24) with under an hour of buffer — the sharpest squeeze on the course.
One more number worth sitting with: the median finisher reaches Foresthill (mile 62) at 8:14 PM and doesn't stop moving until 7:48 AM +1d. Everything after that happens in the dark. If your training plan has no night running in it, the data says it should.
Same course. Different race every year.
2021 was the brutal year — only 66% of starters finished. The fastest winning time in the data is 14:09 (2019).

Methodology & sources
Split data: official per-runner checkpoint times for 7 Western States Endurance Run editions (2018–2025), 2,034 finishers at 21 timed checkpoints. Cutoff chart: 2025 official aid station chart (www.wser.org/aid-stations/). All split-derived figures describe finishers only — runners who dropped or missed a cutoff do not appear in split data, so buffer statistics understate how tight cutoffs are for the full field. Medians are used throughout; no figure on this page is modeled or extrapolated.
